Jewish cemeteryJesenského No. 1

Jewish cemetery בית-הקברות היהודי בז'ילינה  lies at the west end of the town in Jesenský Street. In the front, there is iron triaxial entrance gate with triangular shield and Hebrew inscription. The parameters of the cemetery are 40 x 180 metres and it is paled by firm wall alongside. Behind the gate, there is situated a poplar alley leading to the ceremonial hall with small buildings built closely to it from both sides. The cemetery lies on horizontal ground and the entrance is through the Ceremonial hall.

Chevra Kadiša
The exact birth date of the Jewish cemetery is not known. It was administrated by Chevra Kadiša society founded in 1865. It was a voluntary society within the Jewish Community framework that was looking after the poor, severely ill and deathward ones. It arranged the most of the duties related to man´s death, ritual purification (tohora), deposit in the coffin, cemetery entourage and the dead interment. Chevra Kadiša brotherhood had one very important role. They had to listen to the sin confession of the deathward one, who recites one of the most important Jewry prayers – Šma Israel (Listen Israel) - as his last words. The membership in the society was an honourable privilege. Except for the gravestones of the famous Jewish families, the cemetery contains the gravestones brought from the Jewish cemetery in Dolný Kubín too. There are also situated the gravestones of the Jewish soldiers who died during the First World War in prison camp (the prison camp was in Žilina during the First World War, then the prisoners were working in the area of industrial and business zone on Rajecká road and some factories in Žilina).
The Jewish inscription is above the entrance of the cemetery "כי אם יש אחריתותקותך לאתכרת" is written in old biblical Hebrew with the following translation: "Therefore your future exists and your hope shall not perish” or “It will be good afterwards and you will not miss your waiting.”
