Cultural events

The town of Žilina in collaboration with partners or as a co-organizer prepares several annual cultural and sporting events. Some of them already have their own history and tradition, which continues to develop (Carnival Slovakia Žilina, Down Town Celebrations, Žilina Cultural Summer, North against South...), others are gradually gaining their circle of supporters  (Medieval Day, Fest Anča...).

You are cordially invited to these events and we hope you have a lot of  fun and many pleasant experiences!

Saint Nicholas in the Town and Christmas Markets (Mikuláš v meste a vianočné trhy)

Pre-Christmas advent atmosphere of the town is enhanced by rich Christmas decorations in its centre. The arrival of Saint Nicholas is also a regular part.  Christmas markets with plenty of stalls on both squares in downtown are also a part of the winter atmosphere.

Carnival Slovakia Žilina (Carneval Slovakia Žilina)

The event Carnival Slovakia Žilina is considered to be both one of the biggest events in Žilina and the biggest carnival festival in Slovakia.

Central-European Music Festival (Stredoeurópsky festival koncertného umenia)

The international festival of classical music Central-European Music Festival is a musical feast of spring.  It is a show of the leading talents in the field of classical interpretative art representing different countries of Europe, including Slovakia.

Downtown Celebrations (Staromestské slávnosti)

Downtown Celebrations is the biggest cultural event in Žilina and northern Slovakia, where folk and artistic craftsmen, folklore ensembles and contemporary Slovak and foreign music scene present themselves.

Marionette Žilina (Bábková Žilina)

The aim of the festival Marionette Žilina  is to present puppet art and production of Slovak puppet theatres.

Žilina Cultural Summer (Žilinské kultúrne leto)

From June to September, plenty of diverse events – concerts, theatres, exhibitions, film projections suitable for all age groups – run in the centre of Žilina on St. Mary´s Square and Andrej Hlinka Square.

Medieval Day (Stredoveký deň)

The event Medieval Day changes St. Mary´s Square to a day in the middle ages. Lovers of good food and music or medieval martial arts will come into their own.

Jollieworkshop (Jašidielňa)

Jollieworkshop is an international festival of creativity and fantasy, which is held annually during the first week in September in Žilina. It is a three-day meeting of mentally disabled people, masters of creative workshops and students, who enter a fairy tale world and fantasy lands.

Day of Health (Deň zdravia)

During two days and through educational activity, organizers of the event Žilina Days of Health draw attention to civilization diseases and offer a healthy alternative lifestyle with the aim of motivating the public to apply it in daily life.

Žilina Literary Festival (Žilinský literárny festival)

Žilina Literary Festival is a way to the world of ideas and images. The festival brings literary art to Žilina. The whole town experiences literary art for seven days.

Fest Anča

The aim of the festival  Fest Anča is to fill the empty space in presenting high-quality animated production for adults.

Festival of Seniors (Festival seniorov)

The Festival of Seniors is held on the occasion of the Month of Respect for Seniors. It is a presentation of senior life through music, singing, dance, folk costumes, handicrafts and traditional cuisine of our grandmothers.


Kiosk is a festival of independent theatre and dance and at the same time, an informal weekend meeting and camping for artists, spectators and cultural activists, which erases boundaries between theatre, reality and social movements.

Woodcarving Symposium (Rezbárske sympózium)

The international Woodcarving Symposium presents traditional folk art to public through woodcarving production right on St. Mary´s Square.

Mayor’s Day

Every year on Mayor’s Day in Žilina, the town hall and the municipal offices open their doors for the public to see how they work.
